Who says the Big 12 doesn’t have a team in the College Football Playoff hunt?
West Virginia is unbeaten, while Baylor has very, very quietly cranked up the wins going 5-0 against four awful teams and Oklahoma State. This is the last of the free-space games before going to Texas in a strange stretch of two games in a month – the Bears will be rested.
It’s not putting up the ridiculous numbers like it did in the Art Briles era, but the offense has been outstanding, cranking up 568 yards per game led by one of the nation’s most devastating running games.
But the run defense has started to slip over the last few weeks – giving up more than 200 yards a game in each of the last three. Can Kansas take advantage of the suddenly-soft Baylor defensive front?
The Jayhawks haven’t been able to get the ground game going, but against TCU last week the passing game gave the Horned Frogs a nightmare of a time with Ryan Willis on fire – almost. He threw for 348 yard and picked apart the TCU secondary, but he lost three picks. Against Baylor, he’s got to be perfect.
Even with the problems, Kansas almost pulled it off, and while that might’ve seemed like a bit of an aberration, Baylor showed two weeks ago that it could play down to its competition with Iowa State coming way too close two weeks ago.
To make this a battle, Kansas has to make Baylor screw up like TCU did last week, giving it away four times to ruin drive after drive. The Bears don’t give it away enough, and Kansas doesn’t have a consistent enough offense keep up. The Jayhawks can’t win this game without running well, and they can’t do that.
