Come on, Wake Forest. Get it done.
The Demon Deacons haven’t been to a bowl game since losing the 2011 Music City Bowl to Mississippi State – the only post-season appearance since 2008 – but now they can become bowl eligible with two weeks off to rest up and prepare for the Army option attack. Four of the last five games are at home, but win this week, and the pressure is off.
Come on, Army. Get it done.
It might take a little finagling and some lobbying to become bowl eligible with six wins and two of them coming against FCS teams, but at the very least the Black Knights can get within range of bowl eligibility by getting their fifth win of the season coming off a total clunker against North Texas. Win this week, and with Morgan State still to play, they’ll hit the six-win mark.
The Army running game has cranked up 300 yards or more against everyone but Duke, but it didn’t matter much last week against North Texas because the O couldn’t stop giving the ball away. There’s absolutely no margin for error for the Black Knights, giving it away seven times last week and 12 times in the three losses. In the four wins, they’ve turned it over just once.
Meanwhile, Wake Forest’s terrific defense has been outstanding at forcing mistakes, coming up with 11 takeaways in the last four games and the team only losing the turnover margin once.
The Demon Deacon defense is outstanding at getting into the backfield and has been outstanding at holding down everyone’s running game but NC State’s. Army will get its 300 yards, but Wake Forest will do its part to hang on to the ball and take away the Black Knight’s time of possession advantage.
It won’t be aesthetically pleasing, but the Demon Deacons won’t have too tough a time getting that sixth win.
