Game Time: 7:00 pm
Venue: Davis Wade Stadium, Starkville, MS
Arkansas is already settled into a bowl spot – it’s just playing for fun and giggles now – while Mississippi State has to finish strong, winning this week and beating Ole Miss to close to get bowl eligible.
But with Arkansas team will show up?
The Hogs were able to battle Ole Miss to a win, and didn’t get out of bed in a 56-3 embarrassment against Auburn. They were dominant against Florida in a brilliant performance, and game back to get manhandled by LSU in the home finale.
Yeah, they’re going bowling, but they’re way out of the SEC West chase and now get to play the role of spoiler. Beat Mississippi State, and that’s it for the Cowbell bowl hopes.
But the season can be more than that. Bret Bielema’s tenure has been fine, but he hasn’t set the world on fire. Winning the last two games against Miss State and Missouri wouldn’t get things burning, but at least it would mean a solid 8-4 season going into the bowl season with things looking up for 2017.
It was supposed to be a rocky year for Mississippi State in the post-Dak Prescott transition, but it can all finish with a bang. As is, beating Texas A&M and ruining life for the then-No. 4 team in the country might be enough of a high point.
Forget about the 51-3 shellacking to Alabama next week – the team put up good fights throughout the year, coming really, really close to having a far better campaign. Of course, you are what your record is, but four of the losses came be one score.
The defense has been okay, and the offense has a nice all-around quarterback in Nick Fitzgerald, but Dan Mullen’s team just doesn’t have the horses.
In the home finale, can the Bulldogs come up with one final big performance to set up an important Egg Bowl against Ole Miss?
Arkansas has alternated win-loss-win-loss-win-loss-win-loss, and now it’s due to figure out the problems from the LSU game and bounce back with a win. The run defense might have its issues when Fitzgerald gets going, but the Austin Allen and the Hog O will throw early and throw often as it’ll move the chains more effectively throughout.
Arkansas will control third down after third down, with the offense holding on to the ball for almost close to 40 minutes. Mississippi State will try throwing to get back in the game in the second half, and it won’t be able to do it.
After a rocky three games, Allen will hit the three-touchdown mark again – a norm for him for a while – as once again, Arkansas bounces back from a loss with a win.
