Arkansas (3-0) vs. Texas A&M (3-0) Game Preview
Date: Saturday, September 24th
Game Time: 9:00 pm
Venue: AT&T Stadium, Arlington, TX
Why Arkansas Will Win
Texas A&M is getting a great start out of QB Trevor Knight, but the running game has been doing the heavy lifting to make everything else work. So far, though, the Hog defensive front has been a killer allowing just 3.7 yards per carry, stuffing the dangerous Texas State attack for just 22 yards last week, and holding up when absolutely needed against TCU.
The Horned Frogs took off for over six yards per carry, and the Aggies will get a few big dashes here and there, but the steady Arkansas pressure will take care of more than its share of battles.
As long as Arkansas is being Arkansas and can grind out long, sustained drives, the A&M offense – duh – can’t score when it’s not on the field. The Hog defense should be nice and rested thanks to an offense that’ll hold the ball for almost 35 minutes to throw the Aggies off their game.
That’s where Rawleigh Williams comes in, running for 354 yards and averaging five yards per carry so far. The Aggies allowed 236 yards of Auburn rushing offense last week, and now they’re about to get slugged in the mouth.
If A&M isn’t explosive like TCU was – and if Trevor Knight isn’t Kenny Hill – this will be a grind.
Why Texas A&M Will Win
The defense has been lights out so far.
Two years ago, the Aggies had a high-flying attack dragged down by a defense that gave up points and yards just as quickly as the offense could crank them up. A&M finished 102nd in the nation in total defense getting ripped to shreds week after week.
Fast-forward to this season, and A&M has been outstanding after three games allowing just one Josh Rosen touchdown pass overall so far to go along with four picks. The run defense has been every bit as strong, allowing 236 yards to Auburn, but only giving up 4.4 yards per carry – it represents the low point for the run defense.
The ultra-aggressive defense has been dominant in the backfield coming up with a whopping 30 tackles for loss so far with 13 coming against Auburn.
Meanwhile, the A&M offense is getting exactly what it needs out of Trevor Knight, who might not be laser-accurate, but has thrown five touchdown passes to go along with three rushing scores.
With good quarterback play, a terrific ground game, a fantastic defense, and one of the nation’s best punting and punt return games, this might just be Kevin Sumlin’s tightest Aggie team yet.
What’s Going To Happen?
The 3-0 Aggies have been better than the 3-0 Razorbacks so far. They’ve been sharper, more efficient, and better, but the Hogs have also been able to find ways to get the job done. A&M did, too, in the opener against UCLA, but on the big stage in a neutral atmosphere, this is where the battling Bielemas make a statement.
Texas A&M has power to go along with pizazz, and Arkansas has finesse to go along with the blast, but in Jerry World, it’ll be the Hog offensive line that takes over as the game goes on. Knight will have to press when the running game doesn’t work, and he’ll make two key mistakes to turn the tide in the second half.
