Why Arkansas Will Win

The Hogs became the Hogs again under Ole Miss – at least they did when they had to.

The averaged under four yards per carry against the terrific Rebel run defense, but they were able to grind out the game to stay in control, with Rawleigh Williams coming up with a solid 180 yards behind one of the best games all year from the Arkansas offensive front.

If the Hogs can keep cranking up the offensive punch – scoring 30 or more against everyone but Texas A&M over the last six games – can Auburn keep up? This is an adaptable Arkansas offense that showed the comeback ability with the passing game against TCU and Alabama, and again, last week the ground game rolled. It’ll have to mix it up against an Auburn team that has the D, but doesn’t really have the O.

Yeah, the Tigers cranked up the rushing production against ULM and Mississippi State, but they’ll have to open it up to keep up – they’re not built to do that.

Why Auburn Will Win

Just how much will the two weeks off help the cause?

Arkansas might have the explosive, balanced offense, but Auburn’s running game should take over the game at times with a few different options to deal with. Freshman Kamryn Pettway tore off 169 yards and three scores against Mississippi State, but Sean White needs to take off from time to time, too. He hasn’t rushed much so far, but Arkansas has been whacked hard by mobile quarterbacks – the Tigers can mix it up a bit.

White’s been brilliant for the passing game over the last five games, hitting well over 70% of his passes after struggling in the opener against Clemson with 200 yards or more in four of his last five outings with six touchdowns and a pick. Auburn might want to run, but White’s making teams pay for loading up to stop the ground attack.

And yes, with the time off, Auburn might be a little crisper and a little sharper against a Hog team coming off of back-to-back games against Alabama and Ole Miss.

What’s Going To Happen?

This is where time of possession has to matter.

Arkansas was able to save its defense against Ole Miss by hanging on to the ball, and now second in the nation in time of possession – holding the ball for almost 36 minutes a game – that’s going to matter.

But Auburn is great at moving the chains and controlling the clock, too.

At home, Auburn will be better out of the gate, and it’ll be able to do a little more in the fourth quarter with White and the passing game starting to take over on third down conversion after third down conversion.

Arkansas will play well and stay in it until the end, but Auburn will come up with a great win going into the road date with Ole Miss next week.
