Appalachian State (5-2) vs. Georgia Southern (4-3) Game Preview
Date: Thursday, Oct. 27
Game Time: 7:30 pm
Venue: Allen E. Paulson Stadium, Statesboro, GA
The hope and expectations have been for this to be one of the biggest matchups over the last two seasons, but Appalachian State blew out Georgia Southern at home last year, and it was the reverse blowout in Statesboro in 2014.
This time around, the showdown is to alive in the Sun Belt title chase.
The Eagle are struggling though, coming into the showdown with a tough win over a bad New Mexico State team, and with three straight losses before that. However, they’ve been on the road for four games in a row and in five of the last six. Is this the week the offense ramps it up again?
The normally devastating ground game is sputtering, averaging a mere 4.56 yards per carry and without a 300-yard game – the norm for this offense in the past – over the last four games.
It’s the wrong time to face the nasty Appalachian State run defense that’s shutting everything down so far in October.
Even with star linebacker John Law banged up, the Mountaineers should be able to step up the defense enough to keep the Eagles from getting their attack going. GSU has had to start throwing the ball more and more to try balancing out the O, and while it’s working to some extent, that’s not what this team is all about.
The offense has 134 pass attempts so far. Last year, the offense threw the ball 137 times all year.
Appalachian State might be on the road, but it’ll be just effective enough offensively to take control early on. The defensive line will be fine, forcing Georgia Southern to throw a whole lot more than it’ll want to.
