Why Western Kentucky Will Win
Welcome to Mike White.
He might not have done much of anything at South Florida, but in the Western Kentucky offense he came up with one of the most impressive and productive debuts in college football history. All he did against Rice was go 25-of-31 for 517 yards and three touchdowns, bombing away with Taywan Taylor and Nicholas Norris combining for 322 yards.
The Alabama secondary is a wee bit better than Rice’s, but this is a fearless WKU team with an offense that’ll press and press and press some more. The raw talent might not be there compared to USC’s skill spots, but the Hilltoppers have veteran playmakers for an O that should finish among the top 15 in the country by the end of the season. The passing game won’t let up, especially if the Crimson Tide pass rush isn’t consistently getting to White.
Why Alabama Will Win
WKU doesn’t have the defensive front to get into the backfield to bother the Crimson Tide stars.
The Hilltopper line is the strength of the defense, but the linebackers are just okay and the secondary will have problems against anyone with solid receivers. Alabama’s receivers are more than solid, but this is a game for the ground attack.
Bo Scarbrough was held to 36 yards on 11 carries last week, but Damien Harris took off and had his fun on the way to 138 yards and nine scores. Throw in the scrambling of Jalen Hurts – who’ll get all the time in the world to work – and Bama should keep the dangerous WKU offense off the field with long, grinding drives.
What’s Going To Happen?
WKU will have its moments. It’ll score more than USC was able to after about ten minutes, but the Crimson Tide will wear down the Hilltoppers with over 250 rushing yards to go along with a huge day from Calvin Ridley. The superstar Bama target caught two passes for nine yards against USC – look out.
