Alabama vs. Auburn Game Preview

Bowl and Conference Implications
Alabama is playing Florida next week for the SEC title, and it will still almost certainly get into the College Football Playoff at 12-1 with an SEC title – if it loses to Auburn. The Tigers are going to finish second in the West no matter what, but can all but secure a spot in the Sugar Bowl with a win and an Alabama SEC Championship victory.
What’s Going To Happen?
To the outside world … whatever.
Alabama is going to the SEC Championship, but it can lose this and still end up winning the national title.
Auburn could potentially get to the Sugar Bowl with a win, but it’s out of the SEC picture.
But the cliché, as always, fits – this game just matters more, no matter what.
Alabama could win a second straight national championship, but if it loses this week, it’ll have to hear a whole year of Auburn fans and their, “yeah … but.”
And for Crimson Tide fans, a third straight Iron Bowl win would start to put the Kick Six nightmare just a bit further into the rearview mirror.
But no matter how this shakes out, it’s been a successful year for both teams. Alabama was able to bounce back from losing the types of stars and starters from its national title winner that would cripple most teams, while Auburn showed that this thing can still work under Gus Malzahn – as long as everyone is healthy.
This could’ve been so much bigger had QB Sean White not been a shadow of his earlier self against Georgia in the 13-7 loss – doing what he could through a shoulder injury – and with rising superstar RB Kamryn Pettway sidelined with a leg problem.
Both are good to go this week, but they’re hardly 100%. And against Alabama, everything needs to be perfect.
Another year, another amazing Alabama defense, leading the nation against the run, ranking second overall, and with its swarming, attacking style suffocating teams allowing just six points over the last three games, while giving up ten points or fewer eight times all year.
The D might be the star, but this is the showcase game for QB Jalen Hurts, who between this game and next week against Florida, can make an interesting MVP-like statement in the Heisman race.
Lamar Jackson has been sensational but Hurts has his team unbeaten.
Auburn might not have Alabama’s D, but it’s not far off, with the line and the pressure to keep to keep Hurts from going off, allowing just 117 rushing yards and 14 points per game.
Pettway will come up with a few big runs when the Auburn offense works like it’s supposed to, but he won’t get enough of them.
White will come up with a few key third down throws, but he won’t generate enough of them in the second half.
Alabama’s offense will get stoned for a while, and then the drip … drip … drip will eventually lead to the flood, and a close game will open up with two big scores to finally let the Crimson Tide fans relax a bit.
Auburn will show off its 2017 potential, but Alabama will flex its 2016 muscle.
