Why Kentucky Will Win
Will it matter that Alabama RB Damien Harris has an ankle problem – he’s expected to be fine – and WR ArDarius Stewart has a knee injury – he’s a bit more questionable – for an offense that kept on rolling through Kent State with no problem whatsoever?
But at some point, the Crimson Tide offense has to look like it lost a starting quarterback, two NFL running backs, and a few other key parts, right?
Maybe not, and that means the Wildcats have to let it loose and start bombing away from the start – and hope for the best.
For all the problems UK has had throughout the season so far, outside of an utter disaster at Florida, the passing game hasn’t been bad hitting Southern Miss and New Mexico State for over 300 yards in each game, and not doing an awful job on the short-range plays against South Carolina.
The Cats can come up with big plays through the passing game averaging almost 17 yards per catch as a team. For this to work, or to even be interesting, QB Stephen Johnson has to come up with a special performance after completing 28-of-41 passes for 445 yards and three scores – granted, all the touchdown passes were against New Mexico State.
Why Alabama Will Win
Kentucky took care of Alabama 6-0 in 1922 to even the all-time series at one win apiece. In 1939 the two teams tied, and in 1997, the Wildcats stunned a bad Crimson Tide team 40-34. And that’s it for the fun for UK in the 39 meetings between the two schools.
Are you ready to think a streak and a run of this magnitude is ready to be changed?
It doesn’t matter how many tricks Kentucky’s offense can pull out of its hat, and it’s not going to mean much against a defense that’s not giving up a thing.
Over 1,100 of the 1,601 yards gained this season came against Southern Miss and New Mexico State, getting stuffed cold by Florida and struggling against South Carolina.
UK RB Boom Williams has been red hot, averaging eight yards per carry with 305 yards and two scores over the last two games, but that’s not happening against the Crimson Tide run defense that’s the typical Crimson Tide run defense – it’s allowed just 270 yards on the year. The line shouldn’t have a problem getting to Williams before he can get started – it’s dominating with a rotation the Cats can’t handle.
What’s Going To Happen?
Kentucky will come up with two big scoring plays to get everyone all hot and bothered, but nothing else.
It’ll be another brutally efficient, brutally effective effort from an Alabama offense that – frighteningly enough – is still trying to figure it all out. Expect close to 300 rushing yards and three takeaways that’ll turn this into an ugly rout.
