Alabama (3-0) vs. Kent State (1-2) Game Preview
Date: Saturday, September 24th
Game Time: 12:00 pm
Venue: Bryant-Denny Stadium, Tuscaloosa, AL
Network: SEC Network
Why Kent State Will Win
The Golden Flashes can still play a little bit D.
It might not be the killer it was last season – it struggled in a shocking loss to North Carolina A&T – but the secondary has been solid and the run defense allowed just 145 yards and under four yards per carry against Penn State.
This is an active, aggressive defense that’s great at attacking the ball from all positions, let by one of the best safeties Alabama will see all year, Nate Holley.
He’s only 5-11 and 187 pounds, but he’s been one of college football’s best hitters for the over the last few seasons, making 137 tackles as a sophomore, 139 as a junior and rocking so far with a whopping 47 stops in three games coming up with 17 against both Penn State and Monmouth.
Why Alabama Will Win
It was fine that the Crimson Tide gave up 43 points last week against Ole Miss. It was one of those strange sort of games that just so happened to get out of hand. And if you noticed at the end of the game, Nick Saban was smiling.
He knows how hard that was. He knows that all in the SEC, especially on the road against a motivated team, it’s all about surviving and advancing, and his team went through the adversity of a disastrous start to come up with a huge win.
But Kent State isn’t Ole Miss, and anything more than three points might incur the man’s wrath.
This has nightmare potential for a Golden Flash offense that’s played Penn State and two FCS teams so far and is still 118th in the nation in passing offense. The Golden Flash receivers won’t have anywhere to go, while the running game should get destroyed by an Alabama line that’ll dominate from the start.
This is the chance for the Crimson Tide to get the depth involved, and it should start early.
What’s Going To Happen?
It all depends on what the Alabama special teamers do in the second half. How motivated will the team by to crank up the dominance against an offense that doesn’t have the slightest bit of talent to make a dent in the Bama front seven?
Kent State will come up with a quirky score at some point off a turnover, but it won’t see too many scoring chances. Alabama will win in a blowout – and Saban won’t be happy about something.
What’s the comp? Bama beat ULM 34-0 last year. It beat Florida Atlantic 41-0 in 2014, Georgia State 45-3 in 2013, and FAU earlier in 2012 40-7. The point? This program doesn’t try to make statements against overmatched opponents.
