Bowl and Conference Implications
Wisconsin wins the West with a win, and is still in the hunt for a College Football Playoff spot if it wins its last two games. Or, it’s in the Big Ten Championship with a loss and a Nebraska loss to Iowa – but the CFP would be out.
Minnesota can’t go to the Big Ten Championship, but it could finish in a four-way tie for the top of the West with a win and an Iowa win over Nebraska. It’s jockeying for bowl position.
What’s Going To Happen?
Can Minnesota screw everything up by playing at the high-level it was at in the dominant 29-12 win over Northwestern?
The Gophers don’t have a passing attack, but it was effective enough last week against the Wildcats to overcome a mediocre day from the ground game. The defense, though came up with one of its best performances of the season, stuffing the NU ground game and stalling drive after drive.
But can the run D handle the pounding of the Wisconsin ground attack and it’s three-back system?
Corey Clement is the star, but Dare Ogunbowale has been an excellent third down playmaker, and Bradrick Shaw is looking like the star of the future as the Badgers have gotten better and better with 220 rushing yards or more in three of the last four games.
Throw in the timely, efficient passing game, and a defense that’s allowing under 300 yards per game, and this is a well-oiled machine that might not always be pretty, but is brutally effective.
Minnesota’s run defense is good enough to keep this close throughout, and the offense isn’t making the big mistakes to give the Badgers any easy opportunities. It’s going to be a grind, and the Bucky fans are going to sweat in the cold as the defense will need to come up with key stop after key stop.
But Wisconsin will get it done and keep the Paul Bunyan Axe.
Both defenses will make this a dogfight throughout, but the Badger D will be just a bit better, and the offense will control the ball just a bit more.
Bot teams do roughly the same things with the same styles, but Wisconsin does everything just a little bit better.
