Bowl and Conference Implications

This is Iowa State’s final game, but it could finish eighth with a win and a Texas Tech loss. West Virginia could take the Big 12’s No. 2 bowl spot with two more wins and an Oklahoma State loss to Oklahoma.

What’s Going To Happen?

On burgeoning rushing star had a whole lot of fun. The other didn’t.

Iowa State mixes up its quarterbacks, with Joel Lanning getting the running work, along with a few passes here and there. He was having a good season, and then he got the fun of facing the Texas Tech defense, running for 171 yards and five scores on just 17 carries.

West Virginia was getting its doors blown off by Oklahoma when Justin Crawford went off.

The junior had three 100-yard games before dealing with the Sooners, and while he didn’t score, he ran for 331 yards on just 24 carries.

West Virginia’s defense is much better than Iowa State’s – it’s not Texas Tech’s – but can the offense avoid the killer turnovers and the mistakes that were such a massive issue?

In general, the Mountaineers haven’t been all that bad when it comes to the major mistakes, but over the last two weeks they’ve given it up eight times and lost 12 turnovers over the last four. It’s no coincidence that the two losses this season came to Oklahoma and Oklahoma State when WVU was -3 in TO margin in each.

Can Iowa State catch West Virginia sulking and pull off a home win to make it three straight victories to close out the season?

The defensive front was able to get to Patrick Mahomes last week to keep the Texas Tech offense under wraps, but mostly the Cyclones won by coming up with three takeaways.

Again with the turnovers – West Virginia can’t give them up. This isn’t a good enough ISU team to win without getting some help – it’s 3-0 when going a +7, and a -3 in the eight losses.

That won’t make a difference this week.

West Virginia’s offense owns third downs, and Iowa State’s defense can’t get off the field. The Mountaineers will bounceback with a solid effort, but it’ll take a huge offensive day to put the game away – and to overcome the turnovers.
