Bowl and Conference Implications

The winner takes the Pac-12 North title and is off to the Pac-12 Championship. Washington will likely play in the College Football Playoff with two more wins, and at worst, will be in the Rose Bowl. Lose, and it’ll tumble down the Pac-12 bowl pecking order – and almost no chance at the Rose Bowl. Washington State would go to the Rose Bowl by winning this and the Pac-12 title, lose, and it would likely be fourth or fifth in the Pac-12 bowl order.

What’s Going To Happen?

Washington turned back into Washington again.

After getting outclassed by USC in a humbling 26-13 loss, and after a rough start against Arizona State, the Huskies turned it on after the first few minutes in a dominant 44-18 win with the explosive offense showing up again and the defense doing its part in a College Football Playoff-caliber effort.

But Arizona State is bad at playing college football, as are most of the teams on the Washington schedule so far this season – at least the teams it beat.

Washington State lost in a fun firefight against Colorado, with both teams playing well, but the Buffs able to get a little hotter and do a little more at home in a 38-24 win. In the end, the loss didn’t matter a lick for the Cougars – they were going to have to win the Apple Cup over the Huskies no matter what.

Luke Falk had one of his least effective games of the season, throwing for 325 yards and three scores, but failing to complete half of his passes. While he was under pressure, it was simply a great day from the Buff D.

Can Washington step up its own secondary to keep the Wazzu offense in check?

It was able to hold down the Cal passing game, allowing Davis Webb to hit fewer than half of his passes with three picks and just 262 yards. The D didn’t do much to get to Webb and crank up the sacks, but it applied enough pressure and swarmed whenever he hit his short-to-midrange passes.

Meanwhile, Jake Browning was the passing star against the Bears three weeks ago, hitting them for 378 yards and six scores, and followed up a rough day against USC with 338 yards and two scores against Arizona State. This week, he’d settle for connecting on 70% of his passes for 203 yards and get a 45-10 win like he did against the Cougars last year.

But this is the Apple Cup.

This is still one of the fiercest of rivalry games, and it’s still prone to quirky/strange things happening.

A week after having problems against the Colorado running game, the Washington State defensive front will rebound with a terrific performance, keeping Myles Gaskin and the Husky ground game under wraps.

Browning will get his yards, but so will Falk in a wonderful firefight with plenty of big plays, lots of yards, and huge home runs back and forth.

A bad Cougar team beat a good Husky team in Pullman in 2012, and won at home in 2008 – will being at home matter enough to pull this off?

Not quite.

It’ll be close, and the Cougars will have their chances, but the Huskies will hang on for dear life in a thrilling win that’ll go down to the last drive.
