USC (6-3) vs. Washington (9-0) Game Preview
Date: Saturday, Nov. 12
Game Time: 7:30 pm
Venue: Husky Stadium, Seattle, WA
With all due respect to Washington State – who has yet to lose a Pac-12 game – and with Colorado and Utah both lurking, this really and truly might be the battle between the two best teams in the league.
Of course, USC lost to Utah, but since then, it’s gone on an impressive run of five wins in a row. What’s been the difference after a 1-3 start? The schedule has gotten a whole lot easier, four of the five games have been at home, and the skill players have stepped it up.
Sam Darnold is the Pac-12’s newest really, really big thing, throwing for 231 yards or more with 18 touchdowns and just three picks in the last six games since taking over full-time, and while he has a fumbling issue, he’s still a dangerous runner and a terrific baller.
WR JuJu Smith-Schuster is banged up with a back problem, after coming up with a strong few games, but Justin Davis appears to be back from an ankle injury to combine with Ronald Jones II to help balance out the attack.
And now they all have to rock against an amazing defense full of next-level talent and keep up with an unstoppable offense that’s the nation’s most efficient.
Welcome to Jake Browning.
Already on the Heisman and national map, in a week without a slew of big games, this is really and truly his chance to own the No. 2 spot in the Heisman race behind Lamar Jackson with another massive performance.
With just three picks, 34 touchdown passes, and as the conductor of the high-powered attack, Browning is doing everything right. Now it’s his shot at making up for last year’s rough performance against USC in the win, hitting just half of his passes for 137 yards and an interception. At the moment, he’s fiery, has the attitude, and he’s going to be in the spotlight.
The USC secondary has been okay at not getting ripped apart, but it’s not a playmaking group that’s allowing more than 200 yards on a regular basis and with just eight picks on the year.
The Trojan defense isn’t likely to come up with the takeaways needed to give the offense a slew of easy chances – Washington has yet to turn the ball over more than once in any game this year – but Darnold and company will do their part to keep up for a half.
And then Washington will take things to another level.
The Huskies were asked to make a statement against Stanford, and they rolled 44-6 with a dominant performance. They were asked to make another statement the next week against Oregon, to make sure the first statement was correct – 70-21.
They got through the stretch of three road games in four dates just fine, and now, with everyone watching, they’re about to prove – once again – that they absolutely belong in the top four.
USC is 6-0 when allowing fewer than 27 points, and 0-3 when allowing more. Therefore …
