Bowl and Conference Implications

Both teams still have a shot at going bowling on APR – Academic Progress Rate. There won’t be enough six-win teams available, so it’ll come down to five-win teams based on APR. With a win, Cal would be close to the top of the list, while UCLA could be down a bit, but would still be in the hunt. The season is over for the loser.

What’s Going To Happen?

UCLA’s been decimated by injuries. Losing QB Josh Rosen has been a problem, but the banged up offensive line has played a big role in having the nation’s second-worst running game.

The defense has given it a shot, and it’s done a terrific job against the better passing games, but there just hasn’t been a big break or a big positive to rally around. With too many close losses, and not any breakthrough wins, the Bruins season never got going.

And now, finally, UCLA gets a shot to open up the attack against the nation’s worst scoring D. It won’t be able to run the ball against the nation’s second-worst run defense, but Mike Fafaul and the passing game kept in check at times over the last few weeks should have a whole bunch of fun in a firefight.

Cal is used to getting into shootouts, mostly because the defense gives up over 540 yards per game. Outside of the puzzling 28-23 win over Utah and the opener against Hawaii, Cal hasn’t given up fewer than 45 points to anyone else.

That should continue this week.

Davis Webb keeps throwing, and the yards keep piling up, but they haven’t been enough to help over the second half of Cal’s season. Webb’s about to pass the 4,000-yard mark and is a 300-yard machine, but the Bears have lost four straight because of the beleaguered defense that can’t tackle in the open field and has problems against anyone who tries to get physical – even with the win over Texas.

But that’s not UCLA in any way offensively. What the Bruins do have is a tough defensive front that got rolled by Joe Williams and Utah, but for the most part has been terrific over the second half of the season.

Forget about grinding running games, though. Get your track shoes on.

It’ll be all Webb vs. Fafaul as each one takes target practice in an up-and-down the field show worthy of the 2016 Pac-12 season. UCLA’s D will be just that much better in one or two key moments to pull it off.
