Bowl and Conference Implications

This is the last game of the season for both teams. Tulane will finish last in the American Athletic West no matter what. Connecticut can move up as high as fourth in the East with a win, or finish last with a loss.

What’s Going To Happen?

Tulane is trying to get through the first season under Willie Fritz with something positive to close on after losing six straight games and not even coming close in the last three. The running game that Fritz brought over from Georgia Southern had its moments throughout the year, but it’s hit a brick wall late.

The Green Wave can’t throw and can’t convert a third down, ranking dead last in the nation hitting on just 26% of their chances overall and connecting on just one of ten tries last week against Temple.

But this is supposed to be a work in progress. Tulane is expected to need a while to get the right parts in place – this is a stepping-stone season.

But this is supposed to be the year when UConn starts winning under Bob Diaco.

The Huskies have lost five straight and seven of their last eight after a promising start, but the offense can’t score. How bad is it? Last in the nation averaging just 15 points per game, UConn has been shut out over the last two weeks while getting outscored 92-3 over the last three games.

Defense has been the hallmark under Diaco, and at least the run D has been fine – it’s the secondary that can’t stop anyone.

Fortunately for the Huskies, Tulane has the nation’s least-efficient passing game, and it’s not going to get rolling now.

Neither team will get into a groove with points being impossible to come by. At home, UConn’s defensive front will keep Tulane’s ground game from taking off, but it’ll be all about the field position and key stops – neither team will move the ball.

It won’t be much fun, but the Huskies will hit a few second half field goals to get by.
