Charlie Strong could survive and get to 2017 as the Texas head coach with a strong finish, a 7-5 regular season, and a good look in a bowl win, but lose to Kansas, and that’s it.

There won’t be any need to get back on the plane back to Austin.

It’s not just that Kansas keeps losing, it’s that it keeps losing a lot.

It’s Year Two under David Beaty, and the team isn’t making big enough improvements to be anything more than just competitive here and there.

The program desperately needs something to build on, and beating Texas this week and/or Kansas State next week would do that. Along the way, the hope is to find players to build on, and it’s going to start with QB Carter Stanley getting the call with Montell Cozart likely out with a concussion.

The 6-2, 196-pound freshman is a bit of a baller, with decent enough mobility to get by, and with a decent, accurate arm, completing 9-of-11 passes with two scores against West Virginia and completed 26-of-38 passes against Iowa State – but the completions didn’t really go anywhere.

Can the Kansas run defense hold up better than it has at any time over the last several years to make this interesting?

The Jayhawk defensive front has been ripped to shreds by everyone but Texas Tech – who spent the game bombing away for well over 500 yards – and now Texas should have a whole lot of fun.

D’Onta Foreman continues to the best running back in college football this year – other than, maybe, Donnel Pumphrey – but if he’s not cranking out ridiculous yards, Texas struggles.

He’s about to crank out ridiculous yards.

Texas might be running him into the ground, but it’s working, with the potential to hit the 2,000-yard mark – he’s at 1,613 – if he goes off over the last two games. He’ll put up 200 yards on the board as the Longhorns rumble without a problem.

Finally, Texas will get a game to relax and enjoy.
