Bowl and Conference Implications

Temple wins the American Athletic East and will play Navy next week with a win or a South Florida loss to UCF. An Owl loss and a USF win means the Bulls will play Navy. East Carolina will finish last in the East with a loss, and could finish fifth with a win.

What’s Going To Happen?

Without the fanfare and without the national attention it received throughout last season, Temple has come up with a brilliant season and is on the doorstep of getting back to the American Athletic Conference title game. It lost last year to Houston but this year’s team has the makeup, the defense, and the scoring punch to pull it off.

Last year, the Owls finished with ten wins. Win their next two games, and the bowl, and the’ll finish with 11.

The defense has become suffocating, shutting out UConn and Tulane on the road in back-to-back weeks, while the offense has gotten creative and keeping things moving.

The running game continues to be the bread-and-butter, but Phillip Walker threw for 337 yards and two scores last week against Tulane, showing off just enough versatility in the attack to make ECU’s defense work even harder.

The Pirates are done after this week, and now it’s their job to play the role of spoiler.

And they’ll have to do it without QB Phillip Nelson, who’s banged up with a shoulder injury.

Freshman Gardner Minshew will once again get a chance to show what he can do, throwing for 238 yards and three scores last week against Navy, and looking solid whenever he’s gotten the chance.

But ECU is 0-5 when he’s been the main man under center. It’s not Minshew’s fault, but he and the offense can’t make up for the mistakes of a miserable defense. Over the last three weeks, the Pirates have allowed a total of 166 points, and that’s not going to stop against a team that needs the win.
