Game Preview & Fearless Prediction

Texas State (2-5) at Appalachian State (6-2)

3:30 pm ESPN3

The Appalachian State machine is rolling. Texas State has lows three straight because the defense can be beaten in any way you want to try cranking up the offense. ASU can crank up the offense in any way it needs to. Winners of five straight, the Mountaineers will keep on winning – the running game will rumble at will – with the showdown for the Sun Belt title coming up at Troy to follow.

Fearless Prediction: Appalachian State 41, Texas State 13
Line: Appalachian State -31.5 o/u: 54

Massachusetts (2-7) at Troy (6-1)

3:30 pm ESPN3

When is Troy going to be in the mix for the New Year’s Six bowl hunt from the Group of Five? Probably never, but the lone loss continues to be at Clemson 30-24. The Trojans continue to be air-tight offensively, and the defense – while it’s had a few problems against the good passing teams – is a killer against the run and allowing offenses to convert fewer than 30% of their third down chances. UMass won’t be able to move the chains.

Fearless Prediction: Troy 38, Massachusetts 20
Line: Troy -21 o/u: 56.5

Idaho (4-4) at UL Lafayette (3-4)

5:00 pm ESPN3

With three of the final four games on the road, the Ragin’ Cajuns need this win over Idaho. The run defense has been strong, and the running game has been okay, but now it’s time to turn it on. The lines have been just okay, not great. On the other side, the Vandals have no defense – as usual – but at times, the passing game has been able to step up and shine when the team wins the turnover margin. That’s not going to happen this week. Louisiana-Lafayette will run okay, will throw better, and will keep looking more and more like the team it was supposed to be from the start of the season.

Fearless Prediction: UL Lafayette 37, Idaho 30
Line: UL Lafayette -5.5 o/u: 55

South Alabama (4-4) at ULM (2-6)

5:00 pm ESPN3

South Alabama has been good from the start, but it didn’t have the Sun Belt wins to show it. It finally got one against Georgia State last week, and now it’s time to go on a run with road games at ULM and Idaho before hosting New Mexico State. ULM is a nightmare against the run, but USA can’t run – it will this week. The Jaguar defense will be excellent against a punchless Warhawk team whose offense has gotten worse over the last few weeks. This is where USA continues the run on the way to an 8-4 record.

Fearless Prediction: South Alabama 34, ULM 17
Line: South Alabama -13.5 o/u: 52.5
