Stanford (6-3) vs. Oregon (3-6) Game Preview

Date: Saturday, Nov. 12
Game Time: 4:00 pm
Venue: Autzen Stadium, Eugene, OR
Network: Pac-12

This was supposed to be the battle that shaped the Pac-12 race, but instead, it’s just a game between two college football teams.

Stanford turned things back around after an awful start, winning three of the last four games and taking two straight to at least get bowl eligible. That’s a small prize for a program used to playing for Pac-12 championships, but this year, and considering what’s happening to other key programs, take the decent wins where you can get them.

Just ask Oregon how much fun bowl eligibility will be.

The Ducks have lost six of their last seven games, the talk about the next head coach is the main topic, and the lost season has the potential to be over with one more loss and bowl eligibility gone.

But on the plus side, there’s a real shot at finishing strong and changing the narrative. Utah and Oregon State – the final two games, both on the road – are against teams that aren’t going to put up a ton of points on the board, and Stanford isn’t going to blow up.

The Cardinal offense still doesn’t have a passing game, and if Christian McCaffrey isn’t rolling, nothing really works.

Relatively healthy, McCaffrey is back to being McCaffrey, running for 169 yards against Arizona and following it up with 199 against Oregon State. Against a depleted Oregon defensive front that’s been struggling all season, just assume another 100+-yard game.

But can that be enough to overcome a mediocre Stanford secondary? Yeah, it’s been better lately, but Oregon is about to bomb away with Justin Hebert needing to crank it back up again after a clunker against USC. It’s the Ducks’ final home game of the year, and they’re going to empty the drawer to try closing with something positive.

And that means Hebert has to throw for at least 350 yards.

He’ll have a great game, but it won’t be enough thanks to a D that’s not slowing anyone down. Finally, the Cardinal O will get to have some fun.

Watch out for Mr. McCaffrey to go off.
