SMU (4-5) vs. East Carolina (3-6) Game Preview
Date: Saturday, Nov. 12
Game Time: 12:00 pm
Network: Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium, Greenville, NC
Call this a bowl elimination game, with SMU trying to bounce back after getting bombed by Memphis 51-7, while East Carolina continues to be in a freefall losing six of its last seven games. With Navy and at Temple to finish, ECU will have a hard time winning out, while SMU has to win two of their last three games with USF and Navy at home to finish things up.
The loss to Memphis exploded a mediocre Mustang offense that can throw well at times, but makes a few key mistakes from time to time. East Carolina, on the other hand, has made a lot of mistakes almost all the time – until recently.
The Pirates have been awful in turnover margin, but that finally started to change over the last two games with no turnovers after giving it away 17 times over the first seven games. SMU doesn’t have a high-octane offense and needs all the help it can get, and again, it can’t start throwing picks.
Ben Hicks has been a rising playmaker in his freshman season for the Mustangs, but he’s given up two picks in five of the last eight games to go along with all the pressing he has to do down the field.
East Carolina is dealing with too many key injuries, with QB Philip Nelson hurting with a shoulder problem, and the depth at running back and on the offensive line starting to be an issue.
ECU won its home game in the last four dates, and it had issues on the road with five of the last seven games away from Greenville. Back at home, even as hurt as they are, the Pirates will finally come up with its second good performance in three weeks.
