Bowl and Conference Implications

Maryland becomes bowl eligible with a win. Rutgers will technically finish last in the Big Ten no matter what, but it’ll be locked into a winless conference season and the 14th spot with a loss.

What’s Going To Happen?

How bad is Rutgers? It lost to Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State and Penn State, by a combined score of 224-0. There was a two-week splash with scares thrown at Minnesota and Indiana, but that was it – the O hasn’t put a point on the board in weeks.

But it’s not like Maryland’s offense has been any better.

Even with the ugly last two games, Rutgers has still outscored Maryland 27-13 over the last three weeks.

In a way-too-familiar issue for the Terps, they can’t find a quarterback who can stay healthy or produce. On their fourth option, freshman Max Bortenschlager gave it a run against Nebraska last week, but with little success hitting fewer than half of his passes for 191 yards and a score.

Rutgers can’t get the passing game to convert anything on third down – they’ve connected on 5-of-42 chances in their last three games. Even worse, in those four losses to the Buckeyes, Wolverines, Spartans and Nittany Lions, the Scarlet Knight offense converted 8-of-59 tries in those four losses.

For all of Maryland’s problems, the defense has done a nice job at times, especially on third downs, and the punting game is fine. Along with its other issues, Rutgers can’t punt.

The Terps will win the field position battle, and that’ll be just enough for the offense to convert on a few short drives to overcome yet another bad day from the passing game. Maryland will run, Rutgers won’t, and in a battle of first-year head coaches trying to turn around tough situations, D.J. Durkin will get his team bowling.
