Bowl and Conference Implications
Penn State can win East and go to the Big Ten Championship with a win and an Ohio State win over Michigan. Michigan State’s season is over after this, finishing no worse than tied for sixth in the division.
What’s Going To Happen?
Penn State (9-2) vs. Michigan State (3-8) Prediction
A lot of this could depend on what happens earlier in the day.
The Michigan-Ohio State game should be over or ending just as this starts, and Penn State will know where it stands.
Can it get into the Big Ten Championship with a win, or is it playing merely to get a New Year’s Six bowl slot?
Either way, the Nittany Lions should bring the effort no matter what, trying to close out a fantastic eight-game winning streak that started with a shocking comeback over Minnesota in an overtime win, and highlighted by the thrilling upset over Minnesota.
The offense has hit a groove at the exact right time, rolling at will – and showing mercy on Rutgers – in four straight blowouts. Okay, so the score of the Indiana game was bigger than the actual performance and game, but impressively, three of the wins were on the road.
RB Saquon Barkley is playing at an all-star level, the defensive line has improved by leaps and bounds – it gave up under 50 rushing yards in three of the last four games – and the team is playing with a confidence it hasn’t shown in years.
And then there’s Michigan State.
Good enough to come within a two-point conversion of possibly upsetting Ohio State, and bad enough to lose to Illinois and Maryland, the lost season comes down to one game playing the spoiler role.
Against Michigan and against OSU, the Spartans were able to keep games close by grinding things down to a stop, playing inspired defense, and getting big performances out of LJ Scott.
Barkley might be the star back in the game, but Scott has been as good or better over the second half of the season, running for 122 yards or more in four of the last five games, with 139 against Michigan and 160 against the Buckeyes.
But this week, the Nittany Lion D will swarm all over him, there won’t be much from the Sparty passing game, and a jacked up team at home will take over early and pull away late.
Michigan State’s season ended with that missed two-point try.
