Bowl and Conference Implications

The loser will finish on the bottom of the North – maybe tied with Cal. Oregon State’s season is over after this, but Oregon has an outside shot of making a bowl game on its Academic Progress Report with a win.

What’s Going To Happen?

The Civil War is supposed to be an Oregon coronation.

Here’s how it works. Oregon State gives it the old college try, since it’s a rivalry game, and then Oregon goes all Oregon and pulls away for the easy win. At least that’s sort of how it’s happened since 2007.

But this has hardly been a normal season for the Ducks, with the offense not quite up to its normal snuff, and the defense coming up with a horrendous year that didn’t seem to be getting any better.

But a funny thing happened on the way to firing Mark Helfrich – Oregon ruined Utah’s season.

The Utes were supposed to blow past Oregon on the way to a Pac-12 South-deciding showdown against Colorado, but that’s gone now.

There’s still a chance to go bowling If there aren’t enough 6-6 teams available – Oregon is high up in the APR chain – but even if that doesn’t happen, closing out with that win over the Utes and a rivalry win over Oregon State wouldn’t be all that bad, all things considered.

The Beavers are closing out an awful season of its own, but after rolling by Arizona last week, beating the Ducks to finish a two-game winning streak would be a huge boost for Gary Andersen going into Year Three.

But the Beaver run defense is about to get ripped up.

Ryan Nall and the OSU running game should do whatever it wants – Nall ran for 124 yards against Arizona last week and got Oregon for 174 yards in last year’s loss – but Royce Freeman will do his part.

The OSU secondary has been solid over the second half of the season, but the defensive front is having its problems. Freeman ran for 135 yards in this game as a freshman, took off for 167 last year, and in what might be his last game as a Duck, will go off for at least 150.

In a battle of bad years, Oregon’s will be a wee bit better.
