It might not seem like it, but this is the second-biggest and most important SEC game of the week behind Florida vs. LSU.

At the very least, it’s the most interesting game in terms of getting SEC teams bowl eligible.

After pulling off the shocker of all shocker fourth quarters to get by Texas A&M, Ole Miss might have saved its season. Rising star QB Shea Patterson did what he needed to do to make a giant splash in place of the injured Chad Kelly, and now all it’ll take is a win over Vanderbilt or Mississippi State to get bowling. Considering all the problems and issues this season, going to a bowl would be a really, really big deal for a young team in need of more practices for next year.

The hard luck Rebels gave Alabama its hardest test of the season – or a close No. 2 to LSU – and they’ve been close in loss after loss, with the highlight of the year the blowout over Georgia before the fourth quarter in College Station.

The defense is a mess, the offense is erratic – especially now without Kelly – and there are way too many problems in several areas, but again, the team is a win away from going bowling.

Meanwhile, Vanderbilt blew its best chance to get within bowl range after losing to a bad Missouri team. The Commodores slowed things to a crawl against Auburn in a close loss, and they’ve been able to keep games close all year long, even with five of the six losses very, very winnable if they had a little bit of luck.

They can still go bowling, but they’ve got to beat Ole Miss and Tennessee to get there. Or, they can win one of the last two, and hope there aren’t enough bowl eligible teams, and then get in on Academic Progress Report – Vandy is close to the top of the list.

Vanderbilt will play stall ball yet again, and that might not be a bad thing for Ole Miss. The Rebels might like to play at a decent tempo, but having a young quarterback like Patterson still figuring it all out, slowing things down a bit should work, even if he proved he can produce once he gets into a groove.

Patterson threw for 338 yards and two scores with a pick, and ran for 64 yards, but now he has to deal with a nasty Commodore D that should give him a hard, hard time.

Vanderbilt will run well early, the defense will lock down on the Rebel running game, and it’ll be an entertaining game, even if there aren’t any fireworks.
