Oklahoma (8-2) vs. West Virginia (8-1) Game Preview
Date: Saturday, Nov. 19
Game Time: 8:00 pm
Venue: Milan Puskar Stadium, Morgantown, WV
It’s not the Big 12 championship game, but it’s a key step.
If Oklahoma wins, and if Oklahoma State beats TCU, the Bedlam game in Norman will be for the conference title, but West Virginia has a chance to make a huge, giant step towards being the One True Champion with a win in what should be the biggest game in Morgantown in a long, long time.
If the Mountaineers win, and beat Iowa State and Baylor, and if Oklahoma State loses once more, at 11-1 they’ll not only be the outright Big 12 champion, but they’ll be right on the doorstep for the College Football Playoff.
It’s not just beating OU that’ll matter – WVU has to look great doing it.
Optics matter for both sides, with the Sooners now back in the CFP chase with the unstoppable offense rolling at will ever since the loss at home to Ohio State.
No. 1 in the nation in passing efficiency and third in total offense, everything is humming.
Baker Mayfield has been fantastic. The running game has been the steadying force, but Mayfield has played at a Heisman level, throwing for 300 yards or more in five of the last six games with 33 touchdowns on the season with just seven picks – two in the last four games.
But there’s no one hotter right now than Dede Westbrook, with 14 touchdown catches in the last seven games. If he’s rolling, and the OU offense gets hot early, can the Mountaineers keep up?
West Virginia’s offense has been good enough, but the team has relied on its defense to get through Big 12 game after Big 12 game. Turnovers were a problem in the loss to Oklahoma State, but the D was able to hold down TCU, stop Kansas State, and get by against Texas.
But the Oklahoma offense will be a different animal.
WVU will come out rolling – QB Skyler Howard will have a big day – but Oklahoma is a professional when it comes to dealing with big games. If might have failed early against Houston and Ohio State, but this is a different team now.
West Virginia might have a strong D, but it doesn’t have the pass rush to bother Mayfield. It’ll be a fun dogfight with both offenses hitting home runs, but the Sooners will pull away in the fourth quarter to take one big step closer to another Big 12 championship.
