Bowl and Conference Implications
Navy won the West and is off to the American Athletic Conference Championship next week vs. either South Florida or Temple. SMU becomes bowl eligible with a win.
What’s Going To Happen?
It’s okay, American Athletic Conference. Go ahead and root this week in the battle of the We Beat Houston clubs.
Navy’s world is already set having clinched the West, and now it’s time to cheer for SMU to pull off a huge win to become bowl eligible and give the league another team to fill a spot.
SMU had its chance last week, but couldn’t stop the USF running game in a 35-27 loss. The offense continues to be effective in the turnaround/breakthrough season, led by a dangerous passing game that blew up East Carolina and proved it could hang around with the better teams in the league when it gets hot.
But can the defensive front handle the Navy running game?
The Mustang defense has been a key part of the overall turnaround, but it struggled to slow down Tulane’s option attack in a win a month ago, and that’s the training wheels version of what Navy does.
There isn’t the pressure in the backfield to stop the Midshipmen before they can get started, and if history this season is any indication, that’s going to be a problem.
Not only is Navy’s offense hot, it’s getting better, cranking out a season-high 480 yards and nine touchdowns in the destruction of East Carolina, getting four of Will Worth’s 22 touchdown runs on the season – along with his sixth straight 100-yard game – in the blowout win.
But it’s possible to throw on the Navy secondary. Everyone but Tulane – again, the option attack – has hit the 200-yard mark, while the Midshipmen have only generated four picks on the year and just one in the last five games.
Navy will give up yards, and SMU will take them, but the Midshipmen will convert third down after third down – and its share of fourth downs – to keep SMU away from a trip and another football game.
SMU just won’t have the ball enough.
