It’s been a rocky road for Rocky Top, but after all the struggles, all the close calls, all the issues during the three-game losing streak, and all the injuries, and all the controversies, if Florida loses at LSU, and the Volunteers beat Missouri and Vanderbilt, it’ll be a Tennessee vs. Alabama SEC championship.

The Vols pulled up out of the nosedive with a cathartic blowout win over Tennessee Tech, with the offense carrying over to a 49-36 win over Kentucky last week to stay alive in the conference chase. But there was one big problem.

The run defense decided not to show up.

Yeah, injuries are catching up to the team in a bit way, but Kentucky was able to run at will with 443 yards and four scores, averaging over eight yards per pop making it two times in the last four games the D allowed 400 rushing yards or more, and three games in the last five allowing 350 yards or more.

Can the Tigers take advantage of the porous and depleted defensive front?

The bowl hopes might be gone, but the team rose up and got by Vanderbilt to keep the season from sinking further into the tank. Now it’s time to play the role of spoiler, looking to ruin Tennessee’s SEC dream before hosting Arkansas to finish things up.

Ending the first year under head coach Barry Odom, there will be plenty of talk about momentum and looking towards 2017, and closing strong with the offense rolling would be a great step.

Again, though, can Mizzou run well enough to make it happen?

The ground game has been effective when used, averaging over five yards per carry over the last six games, but when the offense is working, it’s been Drew Lock and the passing game that rolls. While most of the production has come in an attempt to keep up the pace after the defense struggled, but Lock has thrown for 220 yards or more with seven touchdowns and just two picks over the last four games, and he’ll have to get hot again.

Lock will do his part to make this a shootout, while it’ll be up to Tennessee QB Joshua Dobbs to do the same.

Carrying the team, Dobbs has hit 23-of-30 passes for 406 yards and six touchdowns with a pick over the last two games, and ran for 147 yards and two scores against Kentucky. He struggled last year against the Tigers, but as bad as he was, Tennessee got the win.

Neither defense will come up with a stop, with both quarterbacks going off with lots of big plays, plenty of yards, and massive mood swings. At home, the Vols will do just enough to win, but like the UK game, it’ll be ugly for the D.
