Michigan (9-0) vs. Iowa (5-4) Game Preview

Date: Saturday, Nov. 12
Game Time: 8:00 pm
Venue: Kinnick Stadium, Iowa City, IA
Network: ABC

Penn State, Ohio State, this is the most important thing happening in your world this week – at least outside of anything you’re doing.

To make this as easy as possible, if Michigan wins out, it’s off to the Big Ten championship. If Michigan beats Iowa and Indiana, and loses to 10-1 Ohio State, then battle in Columbus will be for the Big Ten East. If Michigan loses two of its next three games, and Penn State wins out, the Nittany Lions will take the East.

Easy enough.

Basically, Ohio State wants Michigan to win, Penn State might need Michigan to lose.

The Wolverines are looking every bit like the nation’s No. 3 team – ranked that way according to the College Football Playoff – ripping through everyone but Wisconsin by double-digits with the No. 1 defense in college football. But as good as they’ve been, there’s still a wee bit of a prove-it factor.

Just a wee bit.

They destroyed Penn State, beat Wisconsin, and rolled by Colorado – all CFP ranked teams – but this is just the second game outside of the state of Michigan, and it’s the first road game against a team with a conference win.

Iowa might be out of the Big Ten title chase, but even after stumbling in its last two games against Wisconsin and Penn State, it can still shape the college football season – and become bowl eligible – with an important win. This is the chance to make 2016 great.

The Hawkeye offense, though, has picked the absolute wrong time to hit the skids.

The ground game went bye-bye, with just 83 yards against the Badgers and 30 yards in the blowout loss to Penn State. The Hawkeyes ran for a mere 34 yards against North Dakota State, and 79 against Northwestern.

Iowa has lost four games this year – to Wisconsin, Penn State, NDSU and Northwestern – when running for under 100 yards, and is 5-0 when running for more.

Michigan’s run defense has allowed more than 100 yards twice – wins over UCF and Michigan State – and it’s not going to all of a sudden struggle against a punchless Hawkeye ground game.

Iowa won’t get its doors blown off, but it doesn’t have the pass rush to bother Michigan QB Wilton Speight, and again, it doesn’t have the running game to slow things down or answer a Wolverine scoring drive.

Penn State, you’re not going to get what you need this week.

*To be honest, it looks like yet another brutally dull sci-fi thing, but it’s 100%, so you’re supposed to see it or else.
