Kentucky (5-4) vs. Tennessee (6-3) Game Preview

Game Time: 12:00 pm
Venue: Neyland Stadium, Knoxville, TN
Network: SEC Network

Unbelievably, Tennessee is still in the SEC championship chase.

There’s no hope of sneaking into the College Football Playoff, but if the Vols can win out against Kentucky, Missouri and Vanderbilt, and if Florida loses once more – to LSU? – they’re in the SEC championship and the season can still be a success. It wouldn’t be a CFP success, but it would still be terrific.

Kentucky is still alive and kicking, too – sort of. The Gators would have to lose their last two SEC games, but even after a tough loss to Georgia, at least the Wildcats are still technically alive for the SEC title in November – there’s no complaint there.

While the SEC might be realistically out of the picture, UK can get bowl eligible with a win. For a program that’s blown its bowl eligibility chances over the last few years, don’t blow off just how big it would be to get that sixth win. It’ll happen next week against Austin Peay if the Cats don’t get it done in Knoxville, but after all the November pain and heartache the program suffered through under head coach Mark Stoops, they want to get it done.

The Cats are good enough to pull it off, but to do it, they can’t give Tennessee any big breaks. -10 on the year in turnover margin, UK finally won the battle last week against Georgia – and it still lost.

Tennessee cleansed the palate against Tennessee Tech with a 55-0 blasting, and now, with something to play for, with the team start to be tighter? Will it start to play up to its talent in a game it’s not only supposed to win, but win easily?

Tennessee doesn’t do anything easily.

Kentucky’s running game will work, and it needs to. The Cats are 5-0 when running for 200 yards or more, and 0-4 when running for fewer. Tennessee allowed 200 rushing yards just twice all year, to Texas A&M and Alabama.

Kentucky isn’t Texas A&M or Alabama.
