Venue: Memorial Stadium, Champaign, IL

This might not have been the campaign Iowa was hoping for after going to the Rose Bowl last season, but after a rough 2016, there was finally a big moment to get excited about.

The win over Michigan didn’t really matter – unless you’re Ohio State – but it made the Hawkeyes bowl eligible and in a crazy world, kept them alive for at least a piece of the Big Ten West.

The offense might have fallen flat against the Wolverines, but Akrum Wadley provided a nice spark when needed to do just enough the help out a defense that pitched a gem. Beat the Illini, beat Nebraska to finish, and if Northwestern loses once and Wisconsin loses twice, yeah, the Hawkeyes are off to the Big Ten title again.

That’s not going to happen, but at least they’re interesting again.

Illinois had its moment against Michigan State a few weeks ago, but reality and life set in hard with Wisconsin rolling to a 48-3 win last week in Madison – the Illini were never in it.

The offense continues to sputter and cough, and now it’ll be up to Wes Lunt to step in and try to make this all work.

Outside of Senior Day, why would Illinois play Lunt for a few more games rather than give Jeff George Jr. some more work for next year? That’ll be a key question mark if the Illini continue to struggle, but at least Lunt might give the team a little bit of a spark, trying to find something positive to work.

It’s not going to happen, even in the final home game.

Iowa’s offense isn’t doing much of anything, either, with 14 points or fewer in four of the last five games and five of the last seven, and it’s not going to explode this week. But it’ll do just enough to get by, while the Hawkeye defense will dominate up front for the second week in a row to spoil Lovie Smith’s final home date of the season.
