Bowl and Conference Implications

Houston is out of the West title hunt, but with a win and a Navy loss, at least it can tie for the top of the standings – even though Navy won the division. Memphis is going bowling, but a win could mean a share of second in the West.

What’s Going To Happen?

The game is sort of interesting, but all the talk and all the focus will be on whether or not the next Texas head coach is on the Houston sidelines. The speculation on Tom Herman taking over the Longhorn gig will be front-and-center – assuming Charlie Strong really is gone – but there are still plenty of interesting things the Cougars could do.

Win two more games, and 11-2 would look fantastic, even if there isn’t a trip to the College Football Playoff at the end of the rainbow.

Can Houston ramp up the same intensity and pressure it did in the blasting of Louisville? If so, Memphis is in for a long, long day, especially considering QB Riley Ferguson was hurt in last week’s blowout win over Cincinnati.

The Tigers don’t have much of a pass rush, but they’ve got a decent enough line and a good enough running game to potentially take the heat off the passing attack.

Even without DT Ed Oliver – who destroyed Louisville before leaving the game with a knee injury – the Cougars were able to keep up the defensive pressure with all-star LB Stephen Taylor putting on a show with 14 tackles, 2.5 sacks, and play after play behind the line.

Jason Stewart stepped in for Ferguson and completed 13-of-15 passes for 138 yards and two scores, but if he’s the one going, he’s going to need that help from the ground game that won’t come.

Houston is second in the nation against the run, mostly because of the plays behind the line, and that’s not stopping this week with the world paying attention again.
