Bowl and Conference Implications
Florida State has a shot at going to the Orange Bowl with a dominant win over Florida, a Clemson ACC Championship win, and a Louisville loss to Kentucky. Florida still has a real shot at the College Football Playoff if it wins in Tallahassee and beats Alabama in the SEC Championship.
What’s Going To Happen?
You owe us, Florida and Florida State.
In one of the ugliest big-team games of the 2015 season, Florida State beat the Gators 27-2 in a blowout that was … sad.
This time around, Florida comes in with a whole bunch of juice and a chance to do something special. Yeah, after beating LSU at LSU – with an epic goal line stand – and if they can beat FSU at FSU, and close out with a win over No. 1 of No. 1s, Alabama, the Gators are going to be close to a mortal lock to getting into the CFP.
But they’re holding it all together with spit and sunshine, suffering a ridiculous array of injuries on both sides of the ball.
Starting QB Luke Del Rio almost certainly won’t play. Neither will a whole slew of star defensive players, but that didn’t seem to matter against LSU, missing top three tacklers Jarrad Davis, Alex Anzalone, and Marcus Maye and still coming away with the massive win.
The running game worked okay, but outside of an epic big touchdown, the passing game went absolutely nowhere. That has to change, as Austin Appleby needs to be more like the passer who hit 81% of his throws against South Carolina, and less like the guy who couldn’t do anything other than the one scoring play to Tyrie Cleveland.
But can the Florida State defense do its part to take advantage of all the Gator injuries and the punchless offense?
The Seminoles are hurt in several key areas, too, but they destroyed Boston College and Syracuse beating them by a combined score of 90-21. But that’s Boston College and Syracuse.
This is hardly a consistent FSU team, sputtering offensively against the better defenses, and faltering defensively at key times. But this game will be about who controls the clock, who’s running game is stronger, and who makes the biggest mistakes.
Florida lives on ball control, but the Florida State is tenth in the nation in time of possession. The Gators might be third in the nation in scoring D and fifth in total defense, but FSU has been a rock against the run.
Can the amazing and resilient Florida defense figure out how to slow down Dalvin Cook, Deondre Francois, and the dangerous FSU backfield?
Florida has a major advantage in the punting game. It’ll keep the Noles deep in their own territory and they’ll keep the field flipped all game long. Cook will be bottled up for long stretches, Francois won’t be able to move the chains, and the Gators will manage to muck it up just enough to stay live for a full four quarters.
Don’t be scared off by the Arkansas game a few weeks ago. Florida’s defense will rise up to make the SEC Championship vs. the Crimson Tide that much bigger.
