Central Michigan (5-4) vs. Miami University (3-6) Game Preview

Just when it seemed like Central Michigan was going to be a factor in the MAC race in some way, it hit a wall, starting with a rough three-overtime outing in a win over a bad Northern Illinois, before losing two straight as part of a run of four losses in six weeks.

Now, what seemed like a certainty to go bowling might be a fight with Ohio and a road game at Eastern Michigan to close things out.

So what’s been the problem? Injuries to a few skill players have slowed things down, but it’s mostly been about three things: turnovers, turnovers, turnovers.

The Chippewas are a -5 in turnover margin over the last three games with nine giveaways. In the five wins, CMU is a +3, only losing the turnover battle once. In the four losses, it’s a -7.

Meanwhile, Miami turned its season around with the offense suddenly finding a spark it never showed in the 0-6 start – helped by QB Gus Ragland taking over for a banged hp Billy Bahl – while the defense has turned into one of the MAC’s best, especially against the run.

The running game has been fantastic in the two victories, coming up with two straight 200-yard games after failing to hit the 200-yard mark all year. In fact, MU ran for 200 yards just once in the last 16 games before getting it all rolling.

So, does Miami turn the ball over? It’s not that bad. Does CMU stop the run? It’s been great at it, at least up until last week against Kent State.

Cooper Rush will take over when the Chippewas need him the most – but it won’t be enough.

The RedHawks have allowed two straight 300-yard passing days – and won. They’ll get bombed on, but they’ll come up with two key picks to keep the momentum going.
