It’s not the MAC West title game, but it’s going to go a long way to determining the pecking order.

And now the spotlight is on Western Michigan.

With Boise State looking just okay in a win over BYU, and with the Bronco resume not that big a deal, Western Michigan has the ability and potential to rise up into the New Year’s Six spot if it keeps on doing what it’s doing.

Outside of the close call to Northwestern to start the season, no one’s come close to touching the loaded Broncos, beating everyone by double digits and coming off a total destruction in the 41-0 shutout at Akron.

Yeah, the competition isn’t the SEC like Alabama has to deal with, but no one’s hotter right now with 41 points or more in the last four games and averaging over 44 a game.

The Broncos are a machine at the moment, doing everything right in turnover margin, on third downs, and on special teams – it’s all working.

Meanwhile, Eastern Michigan is on the verge of a bowl bid for the first time since beating San Jose State in your 1987 California Bowl.

The Eagles might not be spectacular like WMU, and they might be beating up on the weak and the sad of the MAC, but they’re coming though in tight games, they’re doing a nice job against the run, and they’re getting the offense moving when they have to.

Todd Porter is trying to get back from a shoulder injury, but Brogan Roback has been terrific for the Eagles throwing for 347 yards and three scores at Ohio last week. Now he – or Porter – and EMU can let it rip in a rivalry game that should be entertaining throughout.

But WMU is too tight, too good, and too sharp right now. The Broncos will be pushed deep into the second half, but they’ll go on two long scoring marches to put it away late.
