Washington State (4-2) vs. Arizona State (5-2) Game Preview

Date: Saturday, Oct. 22
Game Time: 10:00 pm
Venue: Sun Devil Stadium, Tempe, AZ
Network: Pac-12 Network

All of a sudden, this has gotten really, really interesting for Washington State.

The Cougars are on a four-game winning streak, with three in a row against the Pac-12 with wins over Oregon, Stanford and UCLA all seen in the preseason as likely losses – or at least losing two of the three games.

Win this game, take care of the road game at Oregon State, and three of the last four games are at home with a real, honest shot at pulling off the shocker in the Pac-12 North as long as the passing game keeps on rolling and the defensive front keeps on doing what it’s doing.

Luke Falk and the Cougar air show sputtered a bit last week against UCLA – Falk didn’t throw a touchdown pass – but the D line was incredible allowing just 43 rushing yards. Wazzu has given up fewer than 100 rushing yards in three of the last four games, and despite the lack of a decent pass rush, it’s dominating at times.

Can Arizona State handle the pressure and get its offensive groove back?

Manny Wilkins returned at quarterback against Colorado, but he was miserable – hitting just 13-of-35 passes for 149 yards and a score – while the running game didn’t provide any help for the third straight week.

The 4-0 start is a distant memory now after losing two of the last three games, but it’s a home date for the Sun Devils, and so far, that’s mattered.

ASU has won all three of its games at home, is 1-2 on the road – struggling in the one win against UTSA – but can the offense keep up the pace? It was able to against Texas Tech and Cal, but it’s sputtered in October.

The Sun Devil secondary that’s dead last in the nation allowing 384 yards per game now has to deal with the seventh-best passing attack in college football – uh oh.

But Wilkins will bomb away at home in what should be a track meet. Wazzu is better equipped to do more, it’s playing better, and more than anything else, it’s not making the key mistakes while also doing a great job of coming up with the big takeaway.

This won’t be ugly for ASU like the Colorado game was, and the team will play stronger in its own house, but the D is just too mediocre to hold up.
