Utah (6-1) vs. UCLA (3-4) Game Preview

Date: Saturday, Oct. 22
Game Time: 4:00 pm
Venue: Rose Bowl, Pasadena, CA
Network: FOX

UCLA bowed out of the Pac-12 title chase with its third loss in the last four games – failing at Washington State with Josh Rosen unable to go – while Utah is still deep in the conference title chase.

The Utes overcame their tough loss at Cal to pull off wins against Arizona and Oregon State, and now if they can get by the Bruins in the Rose Bowl, they’ve got a few chances to really and truly be knee deep in the fun.

The offense isn’t all that explosive, and it’s not even as grinding as it’s been in past years, but it’s good enough to go along with a solid defense that’s hitting its stride at just the right time.

Oregon State’s spread was able to get going against the Ute front seven, but UCLA doesn’t have enough power – although it’s trying – to overcome the mistakes with just enough of a passing game to get by. But it needs its star to be ready to roll.

Rosen is expected to be back – or at least close to it – with a shoulder problem starting to get better. Mike Fafaul was okay in Rosen’s place against Washington State throwing for 258 yards and three scores with two tough picks – it wasn’t his fault the Bruins lost – but there aren’t enough weapons to help the cause if he’s in charge.

Rosen threw for 220 yards and a touchdown in last year’s 17-9 win over the Utes, and now the Bruins desperately need him to get on the field, and carry the team on his one good shoulder.

But the UCLA offense won’t be able to get it done no matter who’s under center.

The Ute secondary has been hammered hard, allowing 249 yards of more over a four-game span, but even if it has problems against the UCLA passing attack, the defensive front will hold its own.

No. 1 in the nation in punting and No. 1 in time of possession, Utah will keep the Bruins pinned deep and should control the game and the clock just enough to make this about who can be more physical. That’ll be the Utes on the road.
