Raise your hand if you ever thought UCLA was going to make a big difference in the Pac-12 title chase?

No one thought Washington State would get out of the last two weeks against Oregon and Stanford alive, much less with wins in both games in blowout fashion – beating the two North stars by a combined score of 93-49. And now the Cougars really and truly can announce that they’re going to be deep in the hunt for the Pac-12 title as the lone oasis in a stretch of road games.

The Cougars have to go on the road three times in four weeks, but going away from Pullman doesn’t matter to an offense that’s kicking it into high gear with the nation’s second-best passing game, and most shockingly, with one of the Pac-12’s better defenses stuffing Stanford last week and coming up with play after play behind the line.

Can Wazzu be good enough at home to get by a UCLA team in desperate need of a win?

The Bruins are a mess.

Josh Rosen is iffy with a leg injury, and now the spotlight is on Mike Fafaul, who played a bit against Arizona State and was a disaster, completing just 3-of-11 passes for 44 yards with two picks. While the Bruins are tight-lipped on whether or not Rosen will play, but no matter who’s under center, the defense has to step up against the red-hot Wazzu offense.

The Bruin secondary has been excellent so far, and it might just be good enough to carry the team. It’ll have to be.

Luke Falk has been everything expected in the Mike Leach offense. He’s taking some shots, but he’s also on fire thrown for 350 yards or more in every game by the blowout win over Idaho when he wasn’t needed for a full game. He threw two picks against Stanford last week, but he also threw for 357 yards and two scores as he picked apart the wounded Cardinal defensive backs.

Can UCLA be physical enough on both sides of the ball to overcome the Cougar storm? Not this week, and not against this new and improved Washington State defense that’ll give up passing yards, but will be good enough in a fired up environment at home to keep the Pac-12 title hopes alive.
