So … what’s the problem with Houston?
Just when it seemed like the Cougars were deep in the hunt for a College Football Playoff spot, they couldn’t handle the Navy running game, barely survived Tulsa, and then got blown out – blown … out – by SMU.
And now, forget about the CFP, it’ll take a miracle just to win the American Athletic West.
The issue, partly, has been a badly banged up offensive line that’s about to have big problems with the UCF defensive front that’s been terrific so far for a D that’s been part of the reason for a big turnaround.
The Knights are two wins away from going bowling coming off a winless season, and with three straight home games to follow, they should be able to get them. However, beating the Cougars – even the deflated ones – would do wonders for Scott Frost and a program that’s one collapse against Temple away from not only being on a roll, but being the leader in the East.
Can the UCF running game get going after hitting a wall over the last two weeks? Not against a Houston run defense that continues to be solid, with the only blip coming against Navy.
The Cougars are 6-0 when allowing under 100 yards on the ground, and 0-2 when giving up more. The Knights haven’t hit 90 yards in either of the last two games, and they’re not going to this week, either.
Houston won’t be back, but it’ll stop the bleeding.
