In its own way, it’s one of the more interesting games of the Big 12 season.

Texas needed this matchup in the biggest way in 2014, and got whacked 23-0. Last year, the Longhorns came off the Oklahoma win and looked like things were going to start blowing up after beating the Wildcats 23-9 – and then they lost a week later to Iowa State.

This time around, they have to put away the tough road game that should be right in their wheelhouse.

Kansas State isn’t going to bomb away like Baylor will next week and Texas Tech will the week after, and there isn’t the dangerous array of offensive talent to face like Oklahoma showed a few weeks ago.

After the defense stepped up and stuffed Iowa State last week, now there needs to be another good performance from the defensive front that should be able to handle the K-State ground game, and won’t have to worry about the porous secondary struggling against anyone who can throw a forward pass.

And Kansas State can think the same sort of way.

The Texas offense might be impressive, balanced, and dangerous, but the Wildcat defense is more than good enough to hold its own at home. It struggled right out of the gate against Oklahoma, but the Sooners might just be that good.

They held down West Virginia and Stanford, and they held serve against Texas Tech just enough to get the win. Fourth in the nation against the run, rock-solid in turnover margin, and doing the typical Kansas State thing in terms of style, this should be a low-scoring slugfest of a game.

Can the Texas power ground attack blast away on the Wildcat defensive front? Probably not – the Kansas State linebackers are too smart, too experienced, and don’t miss tackles.

But can the Kansas State offense get anything moving? QB Jesse Ertz is back from a shoulder injury, and he’s got to try making something happen down the field, challenging the shaky Longhorn secondary.

He won’t be able to do it.

This will come down to who has the better ground attack, and Texas will win the battle. Kansas State will lose the time of possession battle, and it’ll lose a tough game that’ll have several opportunities for each to take over.
