Alright, Charlie Strong. You want to turn down this blazing flame on your hot seat? Beat Baylor for the second year in a row, get to .500, and make a big second half run with a team that’s better than it’s been playing.

It’s all there offensively, but it’s just not quite coming together lately in terms of coming up with the impressive scoring drives needed. The quick-tempo attack is fizzling too often, even though there’s a strong balance with an ultra-efficient passing game and, thanks to D’Onta Foreman, a killer ground attack.

But the defense still can’t seem to stop anyone from throwing the ball on a consistent basis. The secondary that’s been such an issue is getting better stats-wise, but that’s because it just got done playing Iowa State and Kansas State.

And when K-State’s Jesse Ertz is going 20-of-27 on you, there’s a problem.

The interceptions and game-changing stops aren’t there from the DBs, and the defensive front is suddenly showing its lack of depth and playmaking ability giving up over 200 rushing yards in two of the last three games. It’s not getting gouged, but it’s not stout enough to make up for all the other issues.

Alright, Baylor. You want to shut everyone up and start proving that you’re a great team that just so happened to play a dogmeat schedule over the first six games? Beat Texas on the road, and use this as a launching pad – because it’s not going to get a whole lot easier.

Playtime is over for the Bears with four of the final six games away from Waco, and with road games at Oklahoma and West Virginia still to deal with.

On the plus side, new head coach Jim Grobe got the first half of the year to get see what he’s got to work with – and it’s all working just fine.

Sort of.

It took too much to get by Iowa State in a 45-42 scare that came down to the final moments, and QB Seth Russell was awful two weeks ago against Kansas, completing just 9-of-22 passes for 144 yards and two scores.

The running game picked up the slack, but this is where Russell and the passing attack have to get rolling again. The Longhorn secondary is just begging to get picked clean, and Russell has to start doing that from the opening drive.

But here’s the dangerous part for Baylor – can the run D hold up? It allowed over 200 yards on the ground to Rice, Oklahoma State and Iowa State, and now it’ll be the Foreman show as the Longhorns pound, and pound, and pound some more to give the defense a bit of a break.

Russell will put up his yards, Foreman will put up his, and the Baylor ground game and Texas passing attack will roll, too.

It’ll be a shootout, and at home under all the pressure, Texas will come up with a close win it so desperately needs.

And Strong will be around for another week.
