Why Tennessee Will Win
Yeah, the Vols are getting all the big breaks, and yeah, they could and should probably be 3-2 and in turmoil instead of 5-0 and all but on the way to the SEC title game, but they’ve also put themselves in a position to pull out these wins.
The second halves of games have shown off the experience, the skill, and the talent to overcome all the sleepy starts, and while that’s a problem to a point, the team appears to have built up a massive amount of confidence because of it.
So what’s been the difference in the second halves of games? Why is Tennessee able to bounce back time and again?
The Vols seem to have a way of pouncing on the right takeaway at the right time. The defensive intensity always seems to ramp up a bit, and Joshua Dobbs becomes sharper and the offense plays looser with more of a sense of desperation and urgency. Now the goal is to get there after the opening kickoff.
That might happen if the mounting injuries start to matter for the Aggies. The A&M receiving corps is hurting, and superstar DE Myles Garrett needs to be productive, even if he’s not 100%. However …
Why Tennessee Will Win
The Vols are hurting, too.
Pounding running back Jalen Hurd will play, but he was sorely missed in the second half against Georgia, while the linebacking corps is still trying to get the pieces back. Everyone is hurting, but Tennessee needs Hurd to be a steadying force to occasionally settle things down.
And that’s what the Vols need way too often – settling down.
Unlike past seasons, Texas A&M has turned into the tough, smart, consistent team with a balanced offense and a tough defense. Don’t expect any second half swoon from this team – just ask Arkansas.
The Hogs are built to own second halves of games, but it was A&M that pulled away in a so-far season-defining finish in the 45-24 win.
This is a very sound, very tested team with wins away from Kyle Field over the last three weeks – don’t just blow off SEC wins at Auburn and South Carolina because they were against Auburn and South Carolina.
The running game is there to set the tone and be explosive when needed, and Trevor Knight continues to be sound with the passing attack that might not always be sensational, but it’s been working.
What’s Going To Happen?
Here’s where the luck and the fun runs out for the Vols.
Texas A&M isn’t going to make the big mistakes Tennessee needs, and it’s going to be too good at getting into the backfield and too solid at keeping the offense moving.
The Aggies will play at a whole other level at home again, getting a big return to help break it open in the second half. Texas A&M will hit the home runs that Tennessee won’t.
