Which team can take a big step towards salvaging a season?

Stanford doesn’t have a passing game and isn’t nearly the physical, tough juggernaut it’s been in past seasons, and worst of all, it’s really, really, really boring.

That can’t happen when you have one the most dynamic playmakers in college football in your backfield.

Christian McCaffrey can’t do it alone, and he’s not.

The Cardinal offense hasn’t just hit the skids, it’s don’t a multi-rollover into the ditch and went kablooey, scoring 17 points or fewer in each of the last five games, bottoming out last week in the 10-5 loss to Colorado – helped by a merciful Buff late safety to make it all look a wee bit better.

And now it’s up to Keller Chryst to try doing something, anything, to get this all moving.

The 6-5, 236-pound junior has the size, the stature, and the arm, and now he has the Stanford starting quarterback job completing 7-of-18 passes for 63 yards and a pick on the season.

Meanwhile, the Arizona quarterback situation that’s been such a weekly issue throughout the year thanks to various injuries, is expected to be settled with Brandon Dawkins coming back from a concussion to give it a go.

Can he do enough to help out the dying Cats on a four-game losing streak?

The team’s claim to fame lately was taking Washington to overtime a month ago, but the offense isn’t doing nearly enough to overcome the problems on a defensive that’s getting ripped to shreds by everyone’s running game.

This needs to be McCaffrey’s week. He ran for 92 yards last week against Colorado after three weeks of playing through injury – and then missing the Notre Dame game – but he should be able to roll without a problem against the Cats that got hit for 530 yards and five scores over the last two games against Utah and USC.

Stanford will finally get a win again, but it’s not going to be pretty doing it.
