San Jose State (2-5) vs. San Diego State (5-1) Game Preview

Yeah, San Diego State is 5-1 and looking like the star of the West division of the Mountain West by a ten-mile-wide margin, but it’s not looking as sharp as it needs to.
It’s been a simple formula – run the nation’s top running back, hope the defense can come through, and don’t assume the passing attack will do anything special.
Donnel Pumphrey is a machine with 1,111 yards and 11 scores in just six games, the defense has allowed just ten points over the last two games, and the passing game is at least efficient. It’s all starting to kick in against the UNLVs and Fresno States of the world, but it’s time to start flexing a little muscle.
San Jose State pulled off a season-saver – or at least a decent moment – beating Nevada 14-10 last week, but soon the offense has to start finding more pop.
QB Kenny Potter took a shot against the Wolf Pack, but he’s expected to play and he needs to shine, failing to throw for more than 160 yards in three of the last four games he’s been able to play in. But to have any chance, the Spartan run defense has to build off the play of the last two weeks.
The return and emergence of LB Christian Tago over the last few weeks has helped, but the Spartans have done a nice job overall against Hawaii and Nevada. They’re not going to stop Pumphrey on a nationally televised Friday night showdown.
The Aztecs aren’t blowing away anyone with their offense, but they’re kicking it in at just the right time. They’re methodical, and that’ll work just fine against the Spartans.
