Why Ole Miss Will Win
The Hog defense can’t seem to come up with a meaningful stop.
Arkansas was never really in the game last week against Alabama, even with Austin Allen bombing away for 400 yards on the Tide D. When Jalen Hurts and company really needed a big play, they came up with one.
The same went for the Texas A&M game, hanging around for a while until Trevor Knight went off – the offense didn’t have an answer.
Ole Miss might have a whole slew of issues, and it’s hardly a complete team, but it can get the offense moving and it can score points in bunches. At this point, the Rebels are putting up 40 on everyone, and they crank up the production in a hurry.
Arkansas doesn’t have the D to do much about it.
Chad Kelly has been fantastic with 13 touchdown passes and just four picks – and three of them in the opener against Florida State – playing as well as any quarterback in college football over the last four weeks, but …
Why Arkansas Will Win
Will the off-the-field problems be a distraction? Kelly was involved at a fight at his brother’s high school game, and while he said he regrets it – even though he was sticking up for his brother – it was still the wrong way to spend the off-week.
Yeah, Kelly is throwing well, and he’s got the Ole Miss offense humming, but Austin Allen is every bit as hot with 371 yards against Texas A&M and 400 with three scores against Alabama. If his D can just come up with a few more stops, and if he can be more consistent early and keep up the pace for a fill sixty minutes, the Hogs have the talent to match Kelly and the Rebels step for step.
But can Arkansas finally go back to being what it’s supposed to be under Bret Bielema? The running game didn’t go anywhere against Alabama, and it’s been just okay throughout the year with Allen taking over most of the work through the air. This isn’t the Rebel defense of last year – it can be run on by anyone who commits to it. Alabama and Georgia didn’t have a problem, even though both teams had to throw to keep up.
Arkansas has to take the pressure off Allen right away. Run, run, and keep running, and the big plays will pop.
What’s Going To Happen?
If this is anywhere near the classic that last year’s showdown turned out to be – with the historic miracle fourth down play that led to the SEC West-changing 53-52 overtime Arkansas win – it’ll be something special.
This game will stand on its own with lots of passing, no defense, and a whole bunch of momentum swings. The Kelly thing this week might have been a major issue, but the rest will do the Rebels a whole lot of good, while no one’s fresh coming off a date against Alabama.
