It wasn’t because Texas dressed the part and didn’t wear sweatpants.

And now Charlie Strong is back on the hot seat.

It’s hardly a positive when you have to beat Oklahoma to turn around your season and your tenure and your program, but that might be what Charlie Strong needs to do after a disastrous loss coming off a two week break.

The offense fell flat in the second half, but it’s more than that.

The special teams were miserable with three blocked kicks, and even worse, the defense couldn’t seem to make a tackle. That’s what Strong is for – he’s supposed to come up with a team that week after week is rock-solid sound in the back seven, and this group couldn’t make an open field stop.

Both offenses were fine, and the Longhorn ground game worked with D’Onta Foreman and Chris Warren combining for 254 yards and two scores, but the Texas D is supposed to be much, much stronger and much, much more effective.

Instead, Oklahoma State took over early, got the breaks and the late drive it needed, and held serve enough in the second half to come up with a massive bounceback win after losing to Baylor.

And now, while the focus will be on Texas and Strong all week, the Cowboys are back in the Big 12 title chase with Mason Rudolph throwing for 392 yards and three scores, and Justice Hill coming up with a very nice, very effective 135 yards and a score on the ground.

This was the explosive, dangerous Cowboy attack that’s supposed to show up every week – but Texas provided plenty of help.

What Really Matters?

Fair or not, Texas had better beat Oklahoma next week. The offense is doing everything it’s supposed to do, and it’s cranking out the production at an impressive level, but the defense has to keep the Sooners in check to – potentially – save Strong’s job. On the plus side, win in Dallas, and with Iowa State up next, there’s a chance to turn this back around fast.

Oklahoma State gets the Cyclones at home with Kansas to follow and West Virginia at home. Now, with this win, there’s a great chance to go on a run and be 4-1 in Big 12 play before going to Kansas State.
