Ohio State (6-1) vs. Northwestern (4-3) Game Preview

Game Time: 3:30 pm

It’s not that big a deal, Ohio State.

Penn State’s not going to win out, and if it does, Michigan’s probably going to win all its games before it has to come to Columbus. But for all intents and purposes, win out, and you’re still going to the College Football Playoff.

First, clean it all up.

The Buckeyes sputtered and slowed against Indiana a few weeks ago, got a brilliant second half out of J.T. Barrett to survive Wisconsin, and melted down on special teams in a total aberration of a loss last week to Penn State.

That was bad, and now comes a red-hot Northwestern team to potentially make things worse.

All of a sudden, everything flopped with a stunning offensive explosion against Iowa in a 38-31 win, and now Northwestern is on a three-game winning streak.

The defense came up with its best performance of the year in last week’s win over Indiana, while the offense continues to get great game after great game from Clayton Thorson with three touchdown passes in each of the last three games.

Northwestern is 4-0 when he throws three scoring passes, and 0-3 when he doesn’t. That’s a problem considering the Buckeyes have allowed just six touchdown passes all year and no more than two in a game.

What’s been the problem for Ohio State over the last three games? The defense has been fine, but the offense can’t seem to find its spark or groove after an amazing first month.

That’s why this week it’s about going back to the basics. The Northwestern run defense has been incredible since getting run over by Northwestern in late September, but it’s about to get powered on.

Mike Weber hasn’t been able to get rolling, running for just 71 yards last week despite carrying the ball a season-high 21 times. The Buckeyes will go back to him, if only to take the pressure off of Barrett. And then Barrett will take over in the second half.

It’ll be another scary game for Ohio State, but the speed and athleticism will take over in the fourth quarter. Northwestern will play well, but it’ll sputter late.
