Temple and UCF are still alive in the East, and it’s not a done deal in the West, but this just might be a preview of the American Athletic Conference title.

USF’s clunker last Friday night in Philadelphia against Temple leaves little margin for error, and going on the road to Memphis and SMU before finishing up against UCF won’t be easy, but if all the parts are working, this is still the league’s most dangerous team – or, at least, it’s just as nasty as Houston.

QB Quinton Flowers suffered a hamstring injury against the Owls, but he’s expected to be okay and ready to roll in the key showdown. It’s more about the defensive front, though, and whether or not it can stop the Navy rushing attack.

Jump-started by the win over Houston three weeks ago, the Midshipmen have kicked in the offense at just the right time with 306 yards in the win over the Cougars, and followed it up with an equally important 447-yard, four touchdown day in the win over Memphis.

It’s not going to be an easy run over the rest of the way, with five of the last six games away from Annapolis, but the key West day against Tulsa is the lone home game. Even so, this is the toughest conference game the rest of the way.

Temple was able to rip apart the okay USF defense, and now it’s up to the linebackers to do a better job of holding their own this week when the Navy runners get to the outside.

Meanwhile, Flowers has to get back on track, and RB Marlon Mack has to get rumbling. The Bulls are 4-0 in their last six games when Mack hits the 100-yard mark, and 0-2 when he doesn’t.

USF just has to be able to hold up. It’s terrific at going on long drives and putting up big numbers when the offense is clicking – it can throw just as effectively as it can run – but the defense gets taxed way too much, and Navy will be more than happy to help by controlling the clock.

Navy’s absolutely the real deal, but USF will come up with a better defensive performance after last week’s debacle, while the combination of Flowers and Mack will be just effective enough on key third downs against the mediocre Midshipmen secondary.
