Navy (4-1) vs. Memphis (5-1) Game Preview

Game Time: 3:30 pm

Yeah, Houston is great, but it lost to Navy to make this the game for the lead in the American Athletic West division. And if Navy takes it, all of a sudden, it’ll have a stranglehold on the race.

The Midshipmen have had a few weeks to sit back and enjoy the win over the Cougars with the defense needing the rest, and the running game and offense ready to gear it back up against a Memphis defense that’s been fantastic so far.

The offense has done its part, with the Tiger passing game putting up points in bunches early and grinding through wins over Temple and Tulane, but can the linebackers and defensive front handle the Navy ground attack?

The Tigers faced the Tulane option last week and got the job done, allowing just 169 yards and a score on 44 carries, starting by getting behind the line on a regular basis. Can they do that and stop the Midshipmen before the offense can get started?

Kicked into high gear, Navy ripped up Houston’s previously amazing run defense for 306 yards and two scores for the fourth time in five games the O ran for 235 yards or more with QB Will Worth starting to take over more and more.

Navy mixes it up with who get the bulk of the work, but when it’s Worth who’s handling the load, the O tends to be better at cranking up the long marches. He ran for 113 yards against Tulane, and tore up Houston for 115 yards on 32 carries. When didn’t the O work? It’s when Worth was stuff by Air Force, who never let him get into the clear.

Get ready for the Tigers to be able to do the same.

Navy might be rested, and they might have a few interesting wrinkles in the option to throw at the MU secondary, but the secondary can hit and hold the second-level runs to a minimum, while the defensive front will hold its own in the interior.

Navy will look good, but this is when Memphis makes its own massive statement in the AAC race.
