Why Northwestern Will Win

Justin Jackson got his groove back.

The star Northwestern running back opened up with a big game against Western Michigan, but he struggled to come up with big runs – averaging under four yards per carry over a three-week span. But he ripped through Iowa for 171 yards and a score against Iowa as he finally got room to move.

Michigan State’s once-vaunted run defense did a nice job against Wisconsin and held Indiana in check, but Jamaal Williams and BYU cranked it up last week with the Cougars running for 260 yards against a Spartan defensive front that allowed way too many runs into the second level.

MSU’s offense didn’t have any answers.

The talent is there in the Spartan backfield, but the production hasn’t been there against anyone but Notre Dame. With just 206 yards of total offense against BYU, now MSU has quarterback issues, not enough production from the backs, and now in need of an identity after a three-game losing streak.

Why Michigan State Will Win

Okay, Michigan State. Enough’s enough. Just line up and blast away.

It worked against the Fighting Irish early on, but for some reason – a reason other than facing Wisconsin – the Spartans got away from trying to blast away and control the offense from the ground. When they keep going to the ground game, good things happen.

Forget the Iowa game – the Northwestern offense just isn’t going to crank up the big-time production. The Iowa game was a bit of an aberration, and while Jackson is one of the Big Ten’s premier backs, MSU’s defense is about to come up with a far better, far stronger performance after the problems against BYU.

The Wildcats don’t have any ability whatsoever to go on long, solid scoring drives, and as long as MSU is forcing long third down chances, forget it.

This won’t be a blowout, but as long as the Spartans can go to the basics and start running, keep running, stop Jackson on first downs, they should be fine.

What’s Going To Happen?

Michigan State won’t exactly look the part again, but with a battle going on to see who’ll get the most time at quarterback between Damion Terry, Tyler O’Connor and Brian Lewerke, this should be a spirited effort.
